One Step Ahead: A Story of Resilience, Purpose and Returning to the Mountains

Some stories aren’t about reaching the summit.

They’re about finding the courage to take the very first step.

This October, at the Adventure Reels Tour 2026 we are bringing to the big screen one of the program’s most powerful and deeply human films, One Step Ahead.

Set amongst the dramatic peaks and fjords of Norway’s breathtaking Sunnmøre Alps, the 14-minute documentary follows skier Bernt Marius Rørstad as he returns to the mountains after a debilitating paragliding accident.

It’s a film about skiing, but it’s equally a story about identity, resilience and discovering what remains when life changes in an instant.

Returning to What You Love

For many people, an accident like Bernt’s would mark the end of a chapter.

For Bernt, it became the beginning of a different one.

One Step Ahead captures the reality of learning to ski again, not just physically, but mentally. It doesn’t shy away from the frustration, uncertainty or setbacks that naturally come with rebuilding confidence. Instead, it offers an honest and deeply personal look at what it means to keep moving forward, one turn, one decision and one day at a time.

Rather than focusing solely on the destination, the film reminds us that progress is often found in the willingness to begin again.

The Mountains Never Left

Bernt grew up surrounded by the rugged beauty of Norway’s Sunnmøre Alps, a region famous for its towering peaks, dramatic fjords and ever-changing weather.

The mountains have always been part of who he is.

Even after his accident in 2018, that connection never disappeared. His love for skiing remained just as strong, becoming both motivation and purpose throughout his recovery.

One Step Ahead follows that journey with remarkable honesty, inviting audiences to witness not only the physical challenge of returning to the mountains, but the mental resilience required to rediscover a part of yourself you thought you might have lost.

A Story Told with Heart

Filmmakers Anthony Bonello and Alexi Godbout have built a reputation for creating adventure films that go far beyond spectacular scenery.

Their work places people at the centre of every story, combining stunning mountain cinematography with authentic storytelling that explores the human experience behind the adventure.

When reflecting on the making of One Step Ahead, Alexi described the experience simply:

“Honestly, the whole experience of skiing with Bernt Marius and learning his story was absolutely mind-blowing.”

That admiration is evident throughout every frame.

Rather than telling audiences how to feel, the film quietly invites you into Bernt’s world, allowing his determination, vulnerability and love for the mountains to speak for themselves.

David Arnaud: The Kayaker Behind the Camera of Gabon Uncharted

What happens when the person behind the camera understands exactly what it feels like to be the person dropping into the rapid?

For filmmaker David Arnaud, adventure filmmaking isn’t simply about capturing spectacular moments. It’s about understanding what lies beneath them: the uncertainty, judgement, friendship and fear that exist long before an athlete commits.
That perspective is at the heart of Gabon Uncharted: Sending Ivindo Falls, screening as part of the Adventure Reels Film Tour 2026.
